Mikiela Nelson Shines on Debut for Exeter Chiefs Women

The Vancouver Rowing Club is thrilled to celebrate former player Mikiela Nelson’s impressive debut with Exeter Chiefs Women, where she scored twice in a thrilling 21-15 victory against Gloucester-Hartpury at Kingsholm.
In a match that began with Gloucester-Hartpury taking an early lead through winger Carys Williams-Morris, the Chiefs responded with tenacity. After securing their first lineout, it was Nelson who burrowed over from close range, marking a memorable first start in the Premier 15s. Her score, converted by fly-half Liv McGoverne, gave Exeter a narrow lead of 7-5.
The Chiefs continued to build momentum, with captain Poppy Leitch orchestrating plays that ultimately led to another try, this time from hooker Clara Nielson. McGoverne’s conversion extended the lead to 14-5, but the home side fought back, bringing the score to 15-14 by halftime.
The second half was a battle of wills, with both teams showcasing their defensive prowess. Despite pressure from Gloucester-Hartpury, the Chiefs held strong. Nelson’s second try came after a powerful team drive, solidifying her place in the match as a key contributor.
As the clock wound down, Exeter’s defense was tested repeatedly, but they managed to secure the win, climbing to second place in the league standings.
Mikiela’s outstanding performance not only highlights her talent but also reflects the strong foundation she built during her time at the Vancouver Rowing Club. We can’t wait to see how her career unfolds in the Premier 15s!
